Nilmohan Sardar, like any other 20 year old, wanted a normal life. Yes, he came from a poor agricultural family, from a family of four, residing in the Lailong village, in the Potka district of Jharkhand, where his family worked as small cultivators, but he was content.
Unfortunately, life had other plans for him: 8 years ago, he suffered an injury when a heavy bucket fell on his legs. The injury seemed to heal, but, after some time, he noticed a severe weakness in both legs. To his horror, he saw both his legs undergo the ‘foot drop’ deformity.
Nilmohan’s village health volunteer (Sahiya) correctly diagnosed him as having leprosy, and this was confirmed, when he was taken to the Potka Government CHC Hospital. Here, he was administered a full course of medical treatment, and was cured of the disease.
However, Nilmohan’s challenges were hardly over, as he had two badly deformed legs, both with ‘foot drop’. He lived in despair until, one day, the Damien Foundation India Trust’s social worker happened to be in his village for assessment, and noticed his legs. He taught him basic self-care practice which would help him to prevent further worsening of deformity. He advised him to undergo deformity corrective surgery of his both feet at Damien Foundation Leprosy Referral Hospital in Amda.
Nilmohan will undergo foot drop corrective surgery for both his legs. He has tears of joy in his eyes all the time, for now, he can look forward to a normal, integrated life in society, where he hopes to get married, and start a small fancy store, to earn and be self-sufficient.
We want to ensure his story has a happy ending by helping him undergo surgery and start his fancy store, in his village. We can make this happen with your support. Please donate generously to this noble cause, and this young man’s future, by investing in his happiness.
